Language and its uses
What is language?
Language is a system of representing information, ideas and feelings. It is a way of thinking and well as communicating. It is a system that encodes and decodes information through the use of symbols and sounds, each of these representing a concept. Languages can be verbal, written or visual (such as sign language). All languages in order to be coherent and understood must represent concepts through accepted symbols, define the structural relationships between these signs (grammar), the context in which they are to be used (pragmatics), and the content specificity or specific meaning depending on context (semantics).
The symbols used by language are arbitrary, the symbols or sounds used to represent things do not have any inherent meaning except for what is given to them by common agreement. This is exemplified by the verse in Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (1594):
“‘Tis but thy name that is my enemy; / Thou art thyself, though not a Montague./ What’s Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, / Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part / Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! / What’s in a name? that which we call a rose/ By any other name would smell as sweet…”
Linguistics
The study of language is called linguistics, which studies various aspects of language from grammar and semantics, to morphology (the formation and composition of words), syntax (the rules of how words are combined into sentences), phonology (the study of sound systems), and phonetics (the formation and perception of sounds). These are considered fields of theoretical linguistics which focus on developing models of linguistic knowledge.
Applied linguistics refers to the study of language for practical use rather than in a simply abstract and theoretical manner. It can be used to teach language, for speech therapy and pathology, translation and so on. It uses tools such as discourse analysis, stylistics, and literary criticism to put linguistics into practice.
